The Symposium 08's proceedings

The Symposium was held on 16 April in the University of Auckland's new Business School building.  123 delegates and 20 speakers, including many prominent players from the last 30 years, talked about what has happened and what might matter for the future.

The day was divided into two parts:

Part A: Looking back: The 20 year experiment in retirement provision: How did we get the unique combination of voluntary saving plus universal New Zealand Superannuation?  What were the lessons?  Was the 1993 political Accord important? Key players reflect on the late 1980s and the 1990s. How have other similar countries developed their retirement systems?  How has New Zealand been viewed in the context of reforms in these countries?

Part B:Looking forward: Where are we now in the late 2000s?  What is the justification for KiwiSaver, and how might it affect the key players?  What are the implications of the 2007 Review of Retirement Income Policy and what needs to be done to set the direction for the next 20 years?  We heard the views of the government, employers and employees. We wondered where to from here?

Presentations and papers
Over the next 2-3 weeks, we will add the papers and presentations given at the Symposium and will also host a Q&A that will ask presenters to deal with questions that could not be dealt with in the Symposium's crowded day.
